When it comes to moving home, pretty much every step of the process brings its own problems, which only leads to one this… STRESS.
However, one of the most daunting aspects of moving home is the packing – and it’s not difficult to see why. Spending days packing up all of your belongings from around your home isn’t exactly how most people want to spend their time.
We’ve created this simple Survival Guide designed to save you tens of hours by making your packing as efficient as possible!
Declutter as much as possible:
Easily one of the best pieces of advice that we can give you is to get rid of all the stuff you no longer need before you even think about packing. This could be by donating items to charity shops, giving them to a friend or family member, or even selling them online and using the money to put towards your other moving costs.
Getting rid of items that you no longer need will reduce the amount that you bring to your new home and, as a result, also significantly cut the cost of your move. It’s a Win Win! 🗑️💸
Hang bundles of clothes together using bin-liners:
This simple tip alone will save you bundles of time!
Get a large bag (such as a bin-liner) and pull it around several pieces of clothing hanging in your wardrobe. Next, tie a rubber band around the hangers for added stability.
When you get to your new home, you’ll be able to hang the entire collection in your new wardrobe at once.
Make use of EVERY available space:
You don’t want to use more boxes than absolutely necessary!
Make sure you fill every nook & cranny with any smaller items that you’re taking with you. Never leave a space that could be filled with smaller things.
Label each box
If you only take one thing from this entire guide, let it be: LABEL YOUR BOXES!
You could use coloured tape with each colour representing a different room where you want to items to go, or simply write the room on the box using a marker pen. Failing to do this will only cause headaches when you get to your new place.
Make an inventory of all your belongings
Remember to take a note of each of your items, and which box they’re located in, prior to packing them away. This helps you to keep an eye on your things, and ensure that nothing is lost during the move.
Take a picture of wiring before packing it away
You don’t want to disconnect your TVs, microwave and other electrical goods, pack them away, then get to your new house and realise that you have absolutely NO CLUE how to connect them again. Easily prevent this problem by taking a picture of the wiring behind each of the necessary items, and using that image to help you set them up again.
Hire experts
We thought we’d include this tip right at the bottom, but it’s probably the best one we have. Why not take all of the worry and hassle out of the process, and just have a team of experienced professionals come and do it all for you?
That way, you can focus on other, less physically-draining tasks, such as registering your change of address or locating your new GP practice.
