Moving house can be a stressful experience as it is, never mind at Christmas when you have a million other things on your mind. Surprisingly, Christmas is one of the busiest times for home-movers, so we’ve compiled a short list of our top tips move moving home during the Christmas period.
Be organised
Decide on a move date as far in advance as possible, as it will be very difficult to organise anything else until you know exactly when you’ll be moving.
Book a removal company
Aim to start getting quotes as early as soon as possible; the earlier you start, the better chance you have of getting your desired date. This will also confirm your move date, which will help make Christmas a bit less stressful.

Start packing early
Packing up your belongings almost always takes longer than you think it will, before you know it you’ll be flicking through old picture albums you find in the attic. We recommend starting your packing at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance. This will allow you to tackle it in small chunks, making the process much easier.
Get your Christmas shopping done early
It’s best to buy all your Christmas presents as soon as possible, so you can get them all wrapped up and/or sent off before you begin your moving process. You’ll likely be short on time during your move, so don’t leave any present buying until the last minute, as this will take time away from other important tasks.
Label your boxes containing presents
Try and keep all of the presents in the same box, and label it. The last thing you want is to arrive at your new home just before Christmas Day and not know where some presents are.
Clear your front drive and pathways
Don’t let bad weather affect your move. Make sure you have salt/grit on hand to clear your front driveway and pathways of any snow or ice which could cause problems for both you and the movers.
Get your TV and broadband provider sorted
There’s nothing worse that not being able to watch TV with the family on Christmas Day, or the kids not being able to play their new games without internet connection. Book a pre-Christmas instalation slot so you don’t miss out!
Sort out your bills
You don’t want to wait up to a freezing house on Christmas morning. Make sure you inform your utility provider of your move, and get gas and electricity sorted for your new home before you move in.
Change of address
Make sure you register your change of address, and inform any friends and family of your move to avoid any cards or presents bring sent to the wrong address. We also recommend using Royal Mail’s redirection service in case anything is still sent to your old home.
Relax
Remember, it’s Christmas, so try your best to forget about the move and take the opportunity to relax and enjoy the time with family and friends.
